Weight Management for LGBTQ+ Patients
Dr. Altepeter is a proud member of GLMA: Health Care Professionals Advancing LGBTQ +Equality. At Alega Health, we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive space for all patients.
We recognize that there are unique aspects to weight management care that may affect LGBTQ+ patients. For example, lesbian and bisexual women experience higher rates of obesity and binge eating disorder than their heterosexual counterparts, yet are less likely to seek medical care for weight management. Our goal to change that. We want every patient to feel comfortable accessing the care they need.
Transgender individuals may experience unique challenges related to body weight and fat distribution changes related to gender-affirming hormonal treatment.
Although an increased risk of obesity has not been shown to affect gay and bisexual men when compared to their heterosexual counterparts, we recognize that obesity can affect patients of all genders and sexual orientations, and strive to create an environment where we provide sensitive, affirming care to anyone seeking medical help with weight management.
